teeth whitening faq

What is tooth whitening?

Tooth whitening is the process by which the discolourations of the enamel are lightened. Protein stains, which cause the discolouration, are broken down making the tooth appear whiter.

How long does teeth whitening last?

This will depend on you and your oral habits. The average person will require periodic touch ups of once or twice a year.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Yes. Research has shown that teeth bleaching with hydrogen peroxide or carbomide peroxide under the supervision of a dental professional is safe for teeth and gums.

How white will my teeth get?

This will depend on your teeth and how stained they are. Generally, the more stained your teeth are...the better the result. If your teeth are heavily stained from coffee or smoking, you will probably see a big change. If your teeth are not heavily stained, the change will not be as great.

How does tooth whitening work?

The active ingredient (either carbamide or hydrogen peroxide) is broken down, allowing oxygen to enter the enamel and dentin, causing the protein stains to be lightened.

What causes teeth to stain or discolour?

There are many causes of tooth stain or discolouration. Some of the most common include smoking, coffee, tea, red wine, berries, etc. Any food or drink with colour will stain teeth. Antibiotics consumed at an early age, natural aging, and trauma can also add to stain or discolouration.

Will my teeth whiten evenly?

There is an overall whitening of all teeth. Generally, the tip (biting edge) of the tooth will whiten quicker than the base (near gumline). Logically, thicker parts of the tooth take longer to whiten. Occasionally, during whitening treatments the teeth can result in a frosty, chalky appearance, This usually goes away by the end of treatment.

Are there any side effects?

For the majority of patients there are none. However, some will experience temporary mild sensitivity on the teeth and/or gums. This will disappear after 48 hours of stopping the treatment. There are different techniques and methods to prevent or decrease sensitivity during treatment. .

Are there any long term side effects?

The active ingredient in the process is hydrogen peroxide which breaks down to water and oxygen. Dentists have been using hydrogen peroxide for over 50 years. Teeth whitening home kits were introduced to the public in 1989. There have been no known long term adverse effects.

How long does the procedure take?

The power bleach technique takes appx. one hour and is done by a dental professional. The home kit method(s) take between 5-10 days. When heavy stain is present, this procedure may take upto 4 weeks. ChicSmiles will decide which method is best for you.

What causes teeth to stain again after bleaching?

Everyday life and habits. We are constantly eating, drinking, and unfortunately, aging.

How often do you have to get your teeth whitened?

Teeth whitening usually lasts 1-3 years, however some people prefer to have touch-ups every 6-12 months. ChicSmiles will recommend the best program for your individual case.

Are my teeth more easily stained now that they have been whitened?

No,

Which teeth whitening method should I choose?

ChicSmiles will recommend which method best suits your needs. The one hour power bleach and custom home-kit are the two most recommended methods.

Will my crowns, implants, veneers and fillings get whiter?

No, only natural teeth will whiten. ChicSmiles' free oral exam will determine whether any of these will hinder the whitening process.

Is it safe to whiten my teeth if I am pregnant or lactating?

No studies or research have been done on this matter. Therefore, ChicSmiles advises pregnant or lactating women not to undergo teeth whitening.

Do over-the-counter bleaching systems I can buy direct from companies work as well?

No, Many of these products may in fact harm your teeth. Due to the large amount of products available, ChicSmiles would be glad to answer any questions you may have. Call 613,769,2442

mouthguards faq

WHAT IS A MOUTHGUARD?

An athletic mouthguard is a plastic device that is placed onto the upper teeth to prevent or reduce injuries. Mouthguards are common among sports where injuries may prove costly to repair if not permanent.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MOUTHGUARDS?

Stock mouthguard: This is the lowest cost option with the lowest degree of protection. There is limited and often no fit adjustment. To remain in the mouth, this mouthguard requires the jaw to be closed at all times. Therefore, breathing and speech is limited. A stock mouthguard is an unacceptable form of protection.

Mouth-formed mouthguard: Boil-and-Bite and Shell-Liner mouthguards are examples of this option. These mouthguards allow for an increased amount of fit adjustment compared to the stock mouthguard, however, they don't compare to a custom-made mouthguard. They are also challenging to fit properly. A mouth-formed mouthguard offers limited protection.

Custom-made mouthguard: This is the ultimate in protection. These mouthguards are custom-fitted to the individual's teeth. They provide the best protection while offering the best in comfort.

WHERE ARE MOUTHGUARDS RECOMMENED? WHICH SPORTS?

Acrobatics, Basketball, Baseball, Bicycle riding, Boxing, Gymnastics, Rugby, Shot putting, Skiing, Weightlifting, Hockey, Football, Power lifting, Rollerblading, Sky diving, Soccer, Squash, Wrestling, Racquetball, Surfing, Skateboarding, Volleyball, Water polo, Martial Arts

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A CUSTOM-FITTED MOUTHGUARD?

A Custom-Fitted Mouthguard provides the ultimate level of:

o Protection o Comfort o Breathing o Speech o Durability o Tear-resistancy

WHAT ARE THE AREAS OF PROTECTION?

Head: Prevents concussions by absorbing the shock upon impact.

Teeth: Prevents permanent tooth damage by deflecting forces.

Jaw: Provides extra support to the jaw therefore reducing jaw fractures.

TMJ: The Temporomandibular Joint is protected from dislocation.

Lips & Cheeks: Prevents lacerations of the tongue, lips, cheeks, chin and gums.

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY MOUTHGUARD?

" Clean your mouthguard before and after each use by rinsing it with soap and cold water (NOT HOT). .

" Place the mouth guard in a firm, well-ventilated plastic container to store or transport.

" Keep your mouthguard away from direct sunlight, hot water, or hot surfaces to minimize altering its shape.

" Avoid bending your mouthguard, this causes the shape to change and therefore no longer giving you the ultimate protection.

gem stones faq

How is the crystal put on my tooth?

We use cement to place the gem on your tooth. This is the same cement used in dental offices for similar procedures.

Will you drill a hole in my tooth?

No. Although some offices use this technique to acquire better adaptation, we at ChicSmiles do not recommend drilling a hole. With no hole drilled, you can easily remove this crystal without further procedures to cover the hole.

Will it harm my tooth or cause cavities?

No. Lack of brushing and flossing causes cavities. Therefore, keep your crystal clean with proper oral hygiene.

How do I keep it clean?

The Crystal will remain clean with proper brushing. Just brush your teeth normally.

How long will it last?

This depends on the person. In most cases it will last anywhere from one to three years. Chicsmiles will guarantee the crystal for 3 months.
